As the grandson of the late Charles Angelus, one of Barbados’ first Industrial Pioneers, I was brought up around woodworking, cabinetry and joinery. At the age of 17, I headed to Newquay, Cornwall, UK, as an apprentice in the manufacturing of surfboards and wind surfers. I returned to Barbados in 1982 and started Flyin’ Fish Surfboards where I manufactured Surfboards. We then opened the Flyin’ Fish garment factory producing surf shorts (baggies) and t-shirts for the local and export market.
In 1993, following in my grandfather’s footsteps, I started my own woodworking business building bespoke furniture, kitchens and closets. I worked on the 352-room Hilton Hotel providing stand-alone furniture for their new hotel rooms and all the outfitting at the Concorde Experience including the gift shop.
I later founded Rapson Building & Maintenance Services Inc (now Rapson Inc.) in response to the need for renovation work in both the residential and commercial sector in Barbados. Our woodworking factory today produces high quality kitchens, closets and bespoke projects under our Rapson Design brand.
More recently, Rapson Inc. has entered the house management/property management sector focusing on delivering a cost effective and timely service for our clients looking after every aspect of planned and reactive maintenance.
